Printing Our Way Through Science!

My Project

My third-grade students are curious, imaginative, and eager to explore the world around them. I want to give them the tools to turn their ideas into reality—and a 3D printer will help make that happen! With this project, we’ll bring science and social studies to life by designing and printing models of landforms, simple machines, historical landmarks, ecosystems and so much more! These hands-on projects will deepen understanding and help students visualize abstract concepts in a concrete way.

Our classroom uses project-based learning aligned with Iowa's 3rd grade standards, where we merge subjects to create meaningful, real-world connections.

With a 3D printer, students will also build connections to math through measurement, geometry, and problem-solving as they design and refine their prints. In the future, we’ll use it to support reading and writing—students might write persuasive pieces tied to their designs, or create models inspired by texts and research.

This tool will not only increase engagement and excitement, but also give students exposure to skills they’ll use in the future: design thinking, digital literacy, and creative problem-solving. By integrating the 3D printer into multiple subjects, students will see how learning connects across disciplines—and how they can use what they learn to build, create, and make a difference.
