Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There are 32 students in my 1st grade ICT classroom. My students are from low-income families. Many of the students have limited resources at home. We are currently in a classroom where there is very limited space and no rug to create a learning/meeting area.
Many students have IEPs, special services and ENL services.
Since our students have a variety of needs, we want to create a welcoming and warm environment for our students to learn in. Our students benefit from routines and organization so they can be comfortable and ready to learn
My Project
Our classroom needs a printer and ink in the classroom in order to help our students succeed in their academics. Our school is using EngageNY as our math curriculum but because we don't have workbooks, we have to print copies of worksheets for the students. Without a printer, our students are not able to fully learn each lessons because they don't have independent work to practice new skills on. Often times, our students also need visual supports for routines or partnerships that we can't provide without a printer to print out physical copies for the students to refer to.
Our classroom printer is currently out of toner and there is limited funding to get more toner.
The students in our class are mainly visual and tactile learners. One of the best way to learn is through hands-on experiments and activities! We love to create games and activities that we print out and laminate for the students. Through literacy centers and math centers, we have found that our students are able to grasp concepts more easily since they can manipulate the materials. However, without the printer, we have not been able to create new activities. With the printer, we can create lots more literacy and math activities for the class.
