Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the second grade teacher of 20 English Language Learners in a high-need school in a large urban city in California.
Constantly our administration is telling us about the importance of incorporating technology into our daily classroom environment. However, they rarely pull through with the technological support all teachers need.
My students live for the moment where their hours of typing up their finished essays come out printed on the beautiful white paper. When I asked four months ago if somebody could come fix my classroom printer in order to finally print many of the essays my students have written, the answer I received was that I should email all the documents to the assistant principal and she'll print for me because it is too expensive for us to call I.T. to come repair it. That was four months ago. And I have successfully gotten documents back only once. Two weeks ago, I asked if I could then just get a new printer for my classroom since repairing the old one seems unlikely (I even volunteered to pay for the ink). The answer I got was that it was too late to add it to the school budget and considering the budget cuts coming up, a printer was not important.
Getting a printer for my classroom would give my students for years to come the opportunity to excel beyond their resources and see their finished work immediately.
A printer and a couple of ink cartridges might seem insignificant to many people, however, these simple things are essential in incorporating technology effectively in my classroom. Only three of my 20 students have a home computer, and none of them own a printer. Thus the feeling my students get when printing their finished work is something so powerful that words can not explain it. It is what they anxiously await as they almost unconsciously master the writing process and the basic parts and use of a computer. A printer produces their final prize! Please help me give all my second graders their writing-process prize. Your help will definitely go a long way.
