This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have students in unheard of circumstances in the Decatur area. Some struggle within their homes and some do not even have homes. Music is an outlet for a majority of my students. Children who study music tend to have larger vocabularies and more advanced reading skills than their peers who do not participate in music lessons. Children who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all of their studies, work better in teams, have enhanced critical thinking skills, stay in school, and pursue further education. I want to create an atmosphere where students can unleash their creativity musically.
My Project
Arts involvement teaches children many skills necessary to succeed in life, including problem solving and decision making, building self-confidence and self-discipline, the ability to imagine what might be and to accept responsibility for it, teamwork, the development of informed perception, and articulating a vision. I want my students to be all around college and career ready. We see a lot of artists and singers but do not understand the process of what it takes to get there. I have a lot of students who uses music as an outlet for their struggles in life at such a young age. I am requesting a printer so that my students can create and print the music that they record and/or write.
