My Project

Hello. I am an itinerant teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing in my local public school district. My students are scattered throughout the district and mainstreamed into general education classes and self-contained special education classes.

Many of my students also have additional disabilities such as autism, intellectual disabilities, visual impairment and other health issues.

Most of my students are the only deaf student in their entire school. Students who are deaf+ require specialized instruction and materials to be able to learn language and academics to the best of their ability.

Students who are deaf with additional disabilities (deaf+) require specialized instructional materials to aid language development, vocabulary acquisition and literacy skills.

Finding instructional materials specifically made for deaf+ students is rare and if found, very expensive. Public schools do not buy materials geared towards teaching deaf and deaf+ student at all. It is up to the teacher of the deaf to provide materials and resources, such as sign language booklets, ASL posters, adapted books that include sign language, flashcards and picture communication boards.

For this special population, printed materials and photographs need to be printed in color, not black and white print. Color brings pictures to life, aids understanding of concepts and makes using printed materials more fun, engaging and interesting.

Public schools do not have color printers available for printing needed materials! I get asked everyday for materials to use with deaf and deaf+ students, and so far, I have been paying to print in color out of my own pocket. This is something I just can't sustain and my students will suffer. Please help me acquire a color printer, ink, card stock and laminating film so that I can make the materials my students need to learn. Thank you!
