Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a diverse campus serving approximately 635 students, grades 7th through 8th, and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander. Twenty-five percent of our students are currently English Language Learners.
At our school, we have 10% of our population receiving services from our special education department.
We have students who come from all over the district including many who are also English language learners. Our students come from a variety of cultures and socioeconomic levels, which means that most students have limited access to technology at home. Students receiving special education services are some of the students with the greatest needs for finding new ways to access the world.
My Project
As a special education teacher, we are constantly writing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and making sure that their information is confidential. A printer and ink will help me print those confidential documents to give to my families in a yellow folder. Some of my families do not use email ,therefore, a physical copy of their IEP is necessary. Usually these documents are 15+ pages, and the price of a printer, ink and paper takes a tool on a teacher's salary.
IEPs are essential to our students in special education.
It is necessary for our families to have that information in a physical copy. In addition, I've included pens that will help me keep track of all the IEP meetings I have this school year. These materials will help me focus solely on teaching, so that I can truly dedicate myself to my students during this pandemic.
