This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse first grade, integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental school-involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 24 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
At my school, teachers do not have direct access to printers. The majority of printing and copying at my school is done off-site, requires a three-day turnaround, and is allowed only in black ink. There are frequently times that I need to print something on-demand. A classroom printer will allow me to print resources for students as they are needed. For example, in the middle of a math lesson I might determine that a group of students needs further practice with a skill--I would be able to print a work page for them. Or, a student might bring up a relevant topic during a discussion, and I would be able to print a visual aid for him to utilize during independent work. As a special education teacher, I am required to compile important documents relating to my students, and having direct access to a printer would truly make my life so much easier.
I believe this equipment will ultimately benefit my students in a positive way.
I can provide more activities for them and stay organized at the same time. They will be able to apply the skills that are taught to them right after it is taught.
