Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a large high school (1700 students) in a rural area. Our Computer Science classes are still quite new. The Introduction to Computer science class, now in its third year, have been working with Raspberry Pi (micro computers) as their main device for learning the Python programming language.
We are the older, and now smaller, of two comprehensive high schools in our district.
Our students are mainly second language learners, and the majority of them qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. Many of them will be the first ones in their family to attend college.
My Project
Bringing a 3D Printer into the Computer Science classroom will make a huge difference in our curriculum. One thing we have been starting to work with is making robots. Basic micro controller robots that the students create and program.
But the most frustrating thing is the lack of materials.
Our students can build with cardboard, but it just doesn't hold up to continued use. But with 3D printers, they can prototype in cardboard, perfect their design, then move to designing a 3D printable item. Once the basic testing is done, they will be able to create their pieces and bring their creation to life. Building a better learning experience, one project at a time.
More than half of students from low‑income households
