I teach high school grades 9-12 in a high poverty and high unemployment area. Many of my students do not have computer/printing access at home and because of this I would like to have the opportunity to provide them with the tools to do so at school. I lend students our digital cameras but they need the opportunity to print and manipulate them their selves. I think that it is also important for the students to use their own photographs as a resource for them to complete paintings of their photos.
Our supplies are limited yet my students enjoy painting and photography. I would to offer them the opportunity to use our own paints and printers to develop ideas for their paintings. Students are working on visual journals and each week they are given different vocabulary words that they have to illustrate using a combination of photos and paint. These journals assist the students in preparing for college by writing and visually describing vocabulary, art terms, political events and their every day lives. The ability to express oneself in more than one medium provides the student with outlets for self expression and sharing of their hopes, fears, and ideals.
The printers would give my students the opportunity to manipulate and print his/her own photos as well as written prose, reports, critiques, etc. The paints and the brushes will give the students the needed materials to actually paint and design in their journals.
Your assistance will provide my students with the opportunity to share their visual images and writings with others in their journals of which parts will be online on our website. By providing the paint and brushes you will give us the opportunity to accomplish one of the basic tenets of arts education: painting and color mixing. The fact that the students won't have to come up with a quarter to get their items printed in the library is a huge deal to my students and I.
