I work with 100 amazing K-5th grade students as an EL (English Learners) teacher. I teach language-focused lessons and provide a safe, creative and fun place to practice English. I hold all students to high standards and focus on a growth mindset.

My Project
We have a pet betta fish, Prince in our classroom. He currently lives in a basic plastic bowl. I have 100+ students come through my room each week and the first thing most of them do is greet Prince, ask how he is doing and inquire about how they can help care for him. I've received some really great questions about why Prince has such a small habitat and some student suggestions for how we could make sure our pet stays happy and healthy.
Our classroom pet, Prince, is in need of a larger home to keep him happily swimming for years to come.
All students K-5 have been interacting with Prince in various ways. The older students are currently researching and writing about betta fish. Our research led to discussions about what a pet betta fish should really have in order to keep it healthy and happy. Thus, this DC project was created. We selected a larger aquarium for Prince, but still a classroom-safe acrylic one. We also chose a rock cave for him to swim through and take a break in and aquarium plants. A student suggested we add the Luffy moss balls and we researched the benefits of these and decided they would be a smart choice. I included a reference book on betta fish so we can continue to learn more about our pet and make sure he receives the care he needs.
Many of my students have never had the opportunity to help care for a pet. In addition to care-taking skills, Prince provides both social and academic language practice in an authentic way.
