My Students

Ask my students what is the most important tool in art and they will answer "my imagination".

I teach Art in three small elementary schools in a small rural school district in western Maine where there is limited exposure to the visual arts.

My K-8 students arrive in the classroom enthusiastic, eager and engaged in their creativity. They are learning to focus on the process of making art, which includes problem solving, taking risks, and not being afraid to make mistakes. This provides for greater individual creative learning and discovery.

My Project

My students enjoy working with their hands making 3D art. Living in rural Maine they are exposed to the natural world and I want to teach them how to use the natural resources to create art. One great relevant way is creating primitive pottery. Using ancient techniques, we will dig local clay from a nearby river, process it by hand, create ceramic pieces, and fire their pieces in a wood fire. I am requesting simple pottery tools, shovels, and buckets for my class.

This is a great STEAM project since the students will also learn about local geology, river systems, environment, physical properties of clay and how it reacts to heat, and experiment by adding various natural materials to the fire to produce coloring.

They will be introduced to how pottery is made throughout history and different cultures. Furthermore, they will learn about the local clay, basic ceramic and modeling techniques and strengthen their bond with the natural world.
