P.R.I.M.E. (Parents Rock in Math Education)

My students need the Family Engagement Math Pack and Math Folder Game Library so that quality games can be sent home to engage families in the learning process and encourage a more positive attitude towards math.

My Students

My fifth grade math students live in a rural area of South Carolina and attend a small elementary school. My students enjoy the opportunity to work cooperatively with hands-on projects and use math manipulatives and games.

My students are very fortunate to attend a school where parental involvement is encouraged and parents look for opportunities to become involved in their child's education.

However, because many of our families have limited income they do not have the means to supply their children with high quality, educational games that the family can play together.

My Project

Students will be issued a PRIME pack to take home and share with their family on a rotating basis. The PRIME pack will include easy-to-follow instructions and materials for hands-on math games and activities. The teacher will set up the PRIME Packs using the Family Engagement Math Games and the Math File Folder Library Games purchased through this grant so that parents can help children practice the skills necessary to reach high academic standards. Students will be able to return their pack with the completed activity log and check out a new pack with different math activities and games. In addition, students will be rewarded for returning their completed activity logs. When packs are returned the teacher will ensure that all materials necessary are in each pack before they are checked out to another student.

This project, PRIME, will help parents to become more involved in their children's mathematics education by providing families with "Family Engagement Math Games" and activities that engage children in mathematical thinking and problem solving while building their self-confidence and appreciation for mathematics.

It will keep students learning at home with games that target key math skills and engage families in the learning process while at the same time encouraging more positive attitudes toward mathematics.

It is important for teachers to involve parents in their children’s education and one way parents can improve their children’s math literacy is to regularly expose them to practical applications of math at home. Parents' attitudes toward mathematics have an impact on children's attitudes. Children whose parents show an interest in and enthusiasm for mathematics around the home will be more likely to develop that enthusiasm themselves. This project will provide the materials necessary for parental involvement to become an integral part of the math instruction for many years to come.
