This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

Many of my students are being raised in single parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status.

These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and have a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and learning disabilities. My average student reads at the pre-kindergarten level.

My classroom lacks workbooks, basic supplies, and has minimal technology. Special Education Teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction with individualized instruction but are not provided the materials to do so. Your contribution will help to fill in the void within my students lives.

My Project

My students need an easel so I can present visuals to differentiate the classwork and so they can be active learners by recording their ideas on the easel.

In math, I model strategies on the easel and then the students come to the easel during guided practice to record their strategies.

The whiteboard allows the other students and myself to see exactly what the student is thinking, as well as, provide the opportunity for immediate feedback to their work. Also, by allowing students to get up and show their understanding creates a positive experience for my students. Having students participate in the whole group lesson is important to me in order to check for understanding before allowing students to work independently. Lastly, the easel can also display anchor charts for students to refer to as they work independently.
