Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, our school will be starting a Drama/Theatre program as an academic Specials Area class. I'm fortunate to be the lead "player" for this group of students who are eager to learn about all aspects of theatre arts. MW is a Title 1 school, so most of my students come from low income families and won't always have access to the supplies they need for engaging, creative activities.
My Project
COVID-19 has presented many different challenges to the way that instruction takes place during the 2020-2021 school year. One of the challenges that presents itself is the inability for students to share items that could normally be shared in years past. In every year that I've taught, I've been able to have a classroom supply of drawing tools for those students whose families were unable to purchase these supplies for them.
Now, students are unable to share things like crayons and must have their own sets to keep everyone healthy and safe.
Many of my student's families may struggle to provide classroom supplies for their primary classroom, let alone for a special area. This project aims to give every student in my Kindergarten, First, and Second grade classes their own set of crayons that can be kept in the Theatre classroom just for them. Additionally, I'm looking to add 3 class sets of scissors that can be disinfected each night for these grade levels to use when working on design activities - which are coming up on the back end of the school year. Students learning at home and who are in need can arrange to pick up their crayon set to use.
I've also requested an extra of each item to help replace items that get misplaced during the year - or to help those in my Intermediate grade level classes who are also in need.
