I teach 8th grade English at a Title 1 school in Northeast Philadelphia. My students come from a wide-variety of backgrounds and have diverse needs in the classroom.
Many students lack parental support and a great deal do not have the basic supplies necessary to ensure their success in the classroom.
This is why I spend a lot of my own money on supplies and resources to help my students reach their potential. My students range from advanced readers to students reading far below grade level. There are children with learning disabilities and ESL students in my classes as well.
My Project
As teachers, there is more and more pressure to provide students with the most rigorous, valuable resources out there. Unfortunately, we are not always given the tools to make that happen.
If I find a short story with interactive activities on the internet, this printer will allow me to print off copies for my class at the drop of a hat, rather than having to send it to the secretary in the office and wait days for copies.
Sometimes the copies are denied because "we don't have enough ink." Other times I'm told that I should just project the text on the board and have the whole class read it that way. I like for my students to have their own copies of texts and activities so they can annotate and write their own notes right on it. This is what all critical thinkers should be doing and I hope this printer will help me foster more complex thinking in my classroom.
