Preventing Drop Outs 1 Young Man at a Time

Help me give my students a graphic novel that focuses on a young man who has to choose between revenge and the rest of his life.

My Project

I am going to focus on self- esteem as a way to increase diversity & equity in my classroom while helping my high school prevent students from dropping out. My classes are dominated by males who have not been successful the first time around in my subject area. They often feel like no one sees them or cares about their success.

I am requesting $500 to purchase 15 copies of Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds to address the concept of perspective in situations & the consequences of our actions that might destroy our lives but makes us feel better about ourselves.

I am also going to purchase fidgets so that the students can put down their cell phones and pick up a manipulator to physically occupy their body while their brain is reading, writing, & speaking.

Finally, I would like to purchase a graduation pin that students will be permitted by administration to wear at graduation somewhere on their gown as a symbol of completing the high school journey and reading oneself to move into life.
