My Students

Help our drumline develop a spiffy new look and sound! Our equipment is in dire need of an update...your assistance will help enable us to travel into the community with looking sharper than ever before!

We are a small school of wonderful students and inspiring staff members.

Because we are small, virtually every student is known by his/her peers and teachers throughout the school. Individualized instruction and attention is never an issue here. This is a powerful environment to be a part of, no doubt. Unfortunately, our students are not growing up in a life of privilege. They come from a low income neighborhood that many find unfavorable. The demographics of our school also speak loudly: As of October 2009, 57% of the students were African-American, while 18% were Asian. 13% were Latino, 9% were Caucasian, and 2% were American Indian. Currently, over 70% of our students are on free/reduced lunch. In order to promote and increase equity in our district, I have been building a music program for two years. This program is a huge contributor to the positive school climate and is a wonderful resource for these children to feel safe, loved, and expand their creative minds.

My Project

As mentioned above, we are raising funds to purchase new equipment for the drumline class at our school. This includes high quality snare drum sticks, bass drum mallets, and quad tom mallets. We are also looking to purchase a specialized practice pad, structured in the same way as a set of quad toms. To start out, having a solid supply of drum sticks and mallets will mean that our students are performing in the community with new, quality equipment. Also, having the quad pad will aid classroom instruction through efficient work. While I am teaching other sections, our quad players will be able to quietly practice. They will also be able to check out the pad and practice their music at home. This is especially convenient and beneficial since our students cannot feasibly take the quad toms home on the bus! Also, we will be able to take these tools with us as we travel to festivals, competitions, and sporting events and hold our own when compared to other school music programs.

With your donations, our efforts to be an increasingly active force within our school district and city will be realized with greater ease.

Unfortunately, our students do not have the funds to be able to purchase this equipment themselves. My school does not have the necessary funds to do this either. Now, you have a choice. You can make a choice to help under-served students find greater success in the classroom with new equipment. Thank you so much!
