Help me give my students a set of the first book and other titles in the Pretty Little Liars series along with a DVD containing the first 7 seasons of the film.
Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be lots of challenges for students in the early teen years. My students are learning English and adapting to a new culture while navigating these difficult years, and this creates an extra layer of challenge.
My English language learner students are resilient, resourceful, and caring young teens.
These students have been through a great deal beyond their control in their short lives, but they use multiple talents and strengths to overcome current obstacles. We share hands-on experiences as a springboard for launching into a new language. Investigating STEM topics, history and the arts in our language arts classroom allows my older new readers to develop key reading and writing skills with age-appropriate materials.
My Project
I am asking for a small class set of the first book in the Pretty Little Liars series after one of my students requested that we read this book. I have a small group of intermediate level English speakers in an intervention period who are just beginning the process of becoming strong independent readers. It is key to respond to the interests of these students. We need multiple copies of the first title in the series including two copies in Spanish, a smaller number of other titles in the series, and a Pretty Little Liars Poster.
Students will be viewing the film version of this series at home as they read the text version at school to compare techniques used to build suspense and create mood in print and nonprint texts.
The Pretty Little Liars: The Complete Series Seasons 1-7 DVD set will be checked out for home viewing.
Overcoming years of negative experiences with reading can be challenging, but sometimes all it takes is a single book. For a number of my middle school students, Pretty Little Liars may be that book. Thank you for helping me put it into their hands.
