"What do you want to be when you grow up?" That question is constantly asked of little ones. My students rarely have an answer to that question. They are all little ones with special needs, growing up in a world where they have few opportunities to learn about what they could become in the future. I want to change that! I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher at Irving School on Chicago's west side. There are very few self-contained special education classes that serve preschool and kindergarten-aged children in the Chicago area, therefore, my students are bussed from neighborhoods throughout the city. To qualify for services in my classroom, the students are either significantly developmentally delayed or diagnosed with a specific disability such as autism, cerebral palsy, or a genetic disorder. I currently service 14 children with chronological ages from 3-6 and developmental skills from 12 months through 5 years. My little ones are constantly moving and exploring. They are encouraged to become active, independent learners, a trait that will impact the rest of their lives. They need materials that will encourage excitement and curiosity toward their future careers. I am requesting a variety of costumes and materials that will expose the children to various career options and pretend play experiences. Puzzles, costumes, books, and manipulatives will enrich my students' lives. The children can dress up as doctors, firefighters, chefs and more while imagining where their lives will lead them. Puzzles, manipulatives, and books will provide even more insight toward their future careers. Please help shape their futures and let their imaginations run wild!
