Help me give my students an opportunity to interact with one another, develop language skills, functional play skills, and gain/practice appropriate social skills in my integrated special education preschool classroom.
Children learn through play. They learn social skills, develop language and peer interactions, while using cognitive skills such as creativity and symbolic thinking. Fine motor skills are acquired as children manipulate small objects and social problem skills are developed naturally in a play-based setting.
Pretend play gives children an opportunity to develop and practice a variety of skills.
Children speak and listen to one another, assign and create scenarios, learn to take turns, develop a sense of community and imagination. The children in my classroom could gain multiple skills while having fun and finding a love of school and learning.
My classroom is integrated with approximately 30 percent of the students having special education needs. These students learn so much from their general education peers through play, modeling, and interactions. It gives me such joy to see children develop these skills and the role that peers play in the acquisition of these skills. In our classroom we have a few pieces of doll furniture and people. The children currently use a shelf or floor to set up play. I would love to end or start next year with a full dollhouse with a diverse set of people to match our classroom diversity.
