My students attend an urban public charter school in Baltimore. They come from various areas of the city and various backgrounds. Despite the hardships of living in low poverty households, my students are eager to learn and very energetic in the classroom.
They are motivated learners who are at the beginning of their school journey and are just learning how to organize themselves and their materials in the classroom.
They strive to try their best even when faced with adversity in their lives.
My Project
Students have spent the last year of their life in their homes. One of the many things we need to do as teachers to bridge the gap due to this is to increase their ability to socialize with peers. Through pretend play, students are able to gain valuable social skills that include cooperation, problem solving, and peer to peer interactions.
Please help my students bridge the gaps created due to the pandemic.
By using a familiar set up of a grocery store, students will be able to work together to decide on roles each student will have, solve problems as they occur naturally in their play and develop peer to peer relationships. Students' use of real world situations to build vocabulary and communication skills through play is a guarantee with this type of center.
