Thanks to all of you, this workshop finally got off the ground this year! \r\n\r\nThe idea for this workshop started over 18 months ago, when a former student of mine, Shannell, reached out to catch up on life. ; -) During our conversation, she shared about her side business in sewing and fashion design and how she wanted to get involved with young students to share her skills. Shannell was serious about this offer, and she put together a beautiful professional proposal, pitched it to our after school director, and after recognizing that we didn't have the funds to cover the cost, collaborated to complete the DonorsChoose application. Eighteen months later, she was in our classrooms engaged with the children. \r\n\r\nThe students reacted with enthusiasm to learn a new skill. Even our energetic young boys, who often choose more active activities, were receptive to learning embroidery. When I stopped by to check in on their projects, they were so excited to share. \"I'm making pillows for all five of my siblings, Mrs. Jennings.\" (K.W.) \"I want to make a pillow for my mother for Mothers' Day, Mrs. Jennings.\" (N.B.) \"Look at my stitching, Mrs. Jennings. I never did this before. This was fun.\" (M.P.) \r\n\r\nNeedless to say, these messages warmed my heart. I am so proud of my former student, Shannell, and her eagerness to give back to our community. I am grateful for this opportunity that DonorsChoose has awarded us. This may seem like a small gesture to some, but you all have brought huge smiles to many and have made a difference in our students' little lives. \r\n\r\nFurthermore, we have enough materials to continue this workshop in quarter four (March-June) for a new group of students for 8 sessions/workshops. This project was super fun but also very challenging. Students had to not overuse materials but actually be quite intentional with what they chose to convey artistically. This project gave students the confidence and plenty of choice that truly stimulated the imagination for this project.\r\n Thank you for generosity and sewing into young lives. This gave students the chance to connect critical thinking and art. Students value having the opportunity to create things.
