My Project

Bringing History to Life for Our Students

Many of our upperclassmen, who have language learning disabilities, have never experienced a field trip but with your help, we can change that.

As a school in an urban community, we often lack the resources to provide these opportunities, so we must fund trips ourselves.

This project will take our students to Boston to explore historic landmarks tied to African American history, including the Massachusetts State House, where the Roberts v. City of Boston case was tried. This pivotal case, set in our home state, laid the groundwork for desegregating public schools nationwide.

To prepare, we’ll read *Sarah’s Long Walk* by Stephen Kendrick, which tells the story of Sarah Roberts and her family’s courageous fight for educational equality in 19th-century Boston. This will help our students connect deeply with the material and see themselves within this history, understanding the vital role their own community has played in shaping the nation.

During the trip, students will visit historic neighborhoods and uncover often-overlooked African American stories. For many of them, this will be their first opportunity to step outside the classroom and experience history in a tangible, meaningful way.

This field trip isn’t just about learning the past—it’s about empowering our students to reflect on their own potential to create change. Your support will help us give these young minds the tools to connect with history, celebrate resilience, and envision a brighter, more equitable future.
