Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Humanities and Law Magnet at a Title I (low income) school in an urban city. My students are as diverse as our city, from different backgrounds, ethnicities and income levels. We are 40% economically disadvantaged, 70% minority, 50% gifted and talented and 100% unique.
What my students all have in common is their energy, creativity and dedication to learning.
My students ride the bus from all over the city, sometimes over an hour each way, to get to school and so in many ways, school becomes a second home for them: a place where they want to be, where they can see their friends and where they are excited to learn every day.
My students are some of our country's brightest young people, and they are funny, charming and extremely intelligent; I feel fortunate to be their teacher. However, we are a public school, and therefore, even though they are eager to learn new technologies, many do not have the resources at home.
My Project
My students participate in an annual poetry competition hosted by a college in our city. The winning poems are given to college students studying visual art who create artwork inspired by the poems and then they are printed as beautiful posters. My students have won the last five years. Last year, I was awarded creative writing teacher of the year for our accomplishments.
Currently, the winning posters of my students' poems are stapled on the wall in my classroom, but I would love to create a space to showcase these gorgeous words and images.
By framing the posters, the students would feel the importance of their accomplishment as something lasting in the school, and something future students can admire and find inspiration from as well.
