My Students
We have taught this book on and off for several years but the old binders are coming apart at the seams. Now that the book has been published in paperback the class would stand to benefit greatly from having the books to read.
Our students here are not used to having new things made available to them.
It is routine to have old, dilapidated equipment and supplies here. As we have built a fantastic new classroom library here the content materials are slowly catching up. It is a beautiful thing to see the students eagerly crack open a new book as a classroom activity. We have found a lot of success with this particular book and I greatly anticipate the success we will have teaching this handy new softcover version of this book. I can't wait to permanently retire our old binders.
My Project
The book "Last Chance In Texas" has been a poignant exploration for our students to explore how we in California do things differently with our justice system. This book allows them to creatively and individually explore alternatives to what their lives have brought to them. This has been a powerful tool to inspire them and help them prevent themselves from getting too deep into our criminal justice system. This book explores how successful the methods have been in such an unlikely place as Texas in reducing recidivism and providing opportunities for at risk youth.
I am so excited at the prospect of disposing of our old beat up and broken down binders which hold old photocopied versions of this book.
It was published in hardcover but our security concerns prevented that from being used but this new paperback version is exactly what we as a class needs. There would be nothing more satisfying than seeing a class full of students cracking open a brand new book, learning to enjoy the new book smell, learning that they too deserve higher quality school supplies.
