This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you were in 8th grade, did you like to sit in your desk all day with no opportunity to practice your skills, collaborate with your peers, or demonstrate your ideas?

My students are active, energetic 8th graders who come from a tough urban environment in Northern California.

They are Bulldogs in name as well as spirit: They may experience adversity, but they will triumph over it. More than 70% of them qualify as socioeconomically disadvantaged. They are so-called "minority" students, and almost half are English language learners. They may have challenges, but these perseverant teens are going to survive and thrive!

My Project

Lessons where the teacher drones on are so boring, but when students have a chance to collaborate and present their ideas, class time flies by. A podium and easel with paper are terrific tools for students to use. Podiums provide an extra boost of confidence for nervous presenters and help them fidget less and get practice in speaking comfortably in front of a group. The poster paper can be distributed to groups who work together to demonstrate their ideas, then can be placed on the easel during presentation time.

No teenager wants to sit still for an hour.

Having an easel, paper and a podium ensures that students will have opportunities to work together and present their work in a professional way. These materials can help take these students to a higher level of collaboration and presentation. Having practice in these skills will help prepare them for their futures in high school, college, and beyond.
