My Students

How do you introduce science to preschoolers? PreK children are tactile. Having materials they can easily manipulate is engaging and encourages children. They need materials they can explore over and over to see how they change and become something new.

I work in a school with high poverty, 78% of the students receive free and reduced-price lunch.

48% of the students in this school speak a language other than English. The school consists of about 450 students, Prek-5th grade. We are located in a large city in Maine. Being in an urban area, we have minimal green space around the school. My classroom is made up of 18 Pre K children. They spend 5 hours a day learning and playing with another Pre K classroom.

My Project

The students work hard in a routine filled day with a literacy based curriculum. I am working on balancing the literacy curriculum with Math and Science. As teachers, we are trying to enhance the learning school wide through hands on science. Children learn through their senses. The ability to manipulate materials in a play environment with peers encourages using the new vocabulary they have been learning. High quality materials are engaging to students. Being able to manipulate and explore these materials is a huge part of their learning. Just like babies put everything in their mouths, preschoolers like to touch items like the reptile specimen. They will use the bug and insect learning center for counting and sorting items. The animal life photos will start many conversations that I can help clarify with facts as the students ask questions.

These materials will be shared among many classrooms to give many children a new science and math experience, and give my students more peers they can talk to using their new language of science.

If students are introduced to the language of science and math in preschool, then carried on through K, it will become a part of a student's natural vocabulary.
