Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our special education preschool classroom is located in a large urban district in California. Many of my students come from low-income families. All of my students have a diagnosis of autism. My classroom is the only autism-specific preschool classroom in my district! My students all receive intensive behavioral early intervention services.

Children with autism often have a very difficult time engaging in pretend play. However, pretend play is a critical milestone that allows children to practice life skills and learn how to play and socialize with others. In my classroom, we work on learning how to play. The easiest and most fun pretend play is playing what you know. It's fun to pretend to be mom or dad, cooking in the kitchen or washing dishes.

We have lots of pretend food and dishes. Now we need some kitchen appliances so we can make a pretend kitchen! The pretend stove, sink, and refrigerator will allow my students to pretend to do things they are very familiar with. I know they like to play with the pretend food - now, with your donation, they can learn to "cook" and "wash dishes!"

Your generous donation to my classroom will allow me to help my students learn to play pretend. It will also help me create a dramatic play area that is more similar to the general education preschool's next door, so my students will know how to play when they play with their general education peers. Your donation will help my children develop critical skills, and have fun!
