I am currently working with eight preschoolers with special needs at the Mickey Mantle Public School, P811M. Through an interdisciplinary thematic approach to instruction, the preschool students are taught preschool-readiness skills. These include, but are not limited to, skills in the following disciplines: mathematics, literacy, science, social studies, social skills, music, and art. Research has demonstrated the importance of using a variety of modalities when teaching--such as a lesson geared to students who are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners--to engage students in the learning process through different senses simultaneously. According to Dr. Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, there are many different forms of intelligence. Teachers should encourage their students to develop and refine their particular talents. As a special-education teacher, I try to increase the students' strengths to help facilitate their learning. While many of my students may struggle with traditional academic tasks, they enjoy participating in art activities. Consequently, I provide the students with a variety of art activities to help teach them their numbers, shapes, colors, letters, and more! Our young learners thank you in for helping them develop and refine their artistic skills while learning their preschool readiness skills!
