Preschool Motivators

My students need stickers, index cards, and tape for motivation as they learn to self-regulate themselves.

My Students

When the children arrive in the classroom, they eat breakfast, brush their teeth; then sign in. After signing in, they are to relax on the carpet with a book until everyone has finished. During this time, they are to use inside voices and interact with each other, displaying social skills.

My students are 3-,4-, and 5-years old.

They are predominately African American and from low income families. Many of the students have behavior and social problems. During the 2014-2015 school year, we tried many things to assist them, teach appropriate behavior and social skills. Nothing worked as well as the sticker reward.

My Project

My students will use the index cards and stickers to express to their families their behavior for the day. This is accomplished each day by receiving a minimal of five stickers on their index card. Every student has an index card taped on the behavior board, displaying their name. Each time the students are appropriately sitting, working, participating, walking in the hall, listening, and playing; they are rewarded with a sticker. After the students have collected their belongings for leaving, they are to retrieve their card and sit at the tables. Their card is reviewed by teacher, and a count of their stickers is made. If there are five stickers the student gets one gift. If the student has ten stickers; then two gifts are given.

The donations made to this project will improve my classroom, because it will help the students improve their communication skills and regulate their emotions.

Many times when children at this age are placed in a group setting, it is hard for them to share, control their voice level, play appropriately with others, follow simple instructions, and communication skillfully.
