Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Head Start Preschool Classroom needs a "Literacy Lounge." With ONLY ONE rug in our entire classroom, you can imagine how hard it is to find a place to curl up and enjoy a book! This classroom serves 20 low income children between the ages of three and five years old. As the first teacher they will encounter on their educational path, I want more than anything to encourage them to love reading. My hope is that this "Literacy Lounge" will be full of soft pillows and bean bags, with a soft rug, as well as attractive books, so that it is inviting to children, parents and all adults who come into the classroom. The message to all will be that reading is a valued and important part of our day. In addition, these items will be used and loved by children this year and for years to come. When a child sits with an adult and/or another child to share a book, positive feelings and memories are developed about reading and learning that last a lifetime. Please help me create a comfortable area in the classroom devoted to fostering a love of literacy.
