Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a fun, energetic preschool class. The students are 3-5 years of age and eager to learn. Each one of them brings something special into our class community. My class provides support to children with special needs from autism, down syndrome, to speech and language impairment.
Entering the class you will hear laughter and dancing.
In the classroom (physically or virtually) my assistants and I work on creating engaging activities to assist the children in reaching their educational goals with every part of the day. An important part of my job is to create a learning environment for all children and meet their developmental levels. It is important to have the tools to be able to make accommodations for each child's needs.
My Project
All the students in the class have language development educational goals in their IEPs. Through picture books the students are building vocabulary, critical thinking, problem solving, and developing basic language skills.
The images in the books alongside the literature, starts conversations and encourages other activities for language development.
The activities developed to support the story books will also strengthen other developmental areas. There are always opportunities in the literature to incorporate math skills, physical development through movement, cognitive skills through critical thinking, fine motor while using scissors to create their art, and language development through the practice in the use of letters to develop speech sounds and also begin early literacy skills.
One of the greatest supports of story books is the students' social emotional development. Story books in the classroom provide a safe place to have conversations and support and expand communication and their language development.
