“UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” If given the items requested, my students would have the tools necessary to help them succeed in this STEM world.
As a new inclusive multiple disabilities preschool teacher, I am very limited to resources necessary to help my students play and grow in an inclusive, stimulating setting.
Our school is a high-poverty, Title I school. The last two years I have taught K-3 Special Education, but now I am a brand new teacher of an inclusion preschool class and my students have a variety of needs. My class is composed of atypical developing and typical developing students ages 3 and 4. Some of the diagnoses seen in my classroom are Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Developmental Delays. My kiddos do not let their diagnosis define who they are. ALL of my kiddos are little balls of energy who thrive on their independency and freedom of choice! It is amazing to watch the “typical” peers playing so freely with my kiddos who are non-verbal and/or are in wheelchairs. Kids really see no difference, they see them all as FRIENDS!
This year our school received funding for raised garden beds. Our preschool kiddos have really taken ownership of the gardens. It has been so much fun to see their excitement when they see all their hard work paying off. This year we have planted radishes, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, peas, cucumbers, kale, and a variety of peppers. The students have already harvested the carrots, kale, and cabbage.
With all the time we spend outside in our garden, we wanted to add some interactive resources to give the students something else to do when we split them up for small group lessons.
That is where the climbing rocks come in. The rain gauge will be to help us introduce the kids to measuring.
