Preparing Young Musicians for the Symphony Through Journaling

Help me give my students access to personal journals for music-related writing.

This project is fully funded

My Project

During the month of May, 2025, my fourth-grade music scholars will soon embark on an exciting journey to experience a live symphony performance. To maximize their learning, I want to provide them with composition notebooks for music journaling. These notebooks will serve as a space for students to document their thoughts, reflections, and knowledge about composers and compositions before attending the symphony. Through structured journaling, they will develop critical thinking, active listening, and an appreciation for classical music that will enhance their experience.

To support this project, I am requesting 70 standard-size composition notebooks (120 wide-ruled pages) for my fourth-grade music students.

These durable notebooks will allow students to research and write about composers whose works they will hear. Also, to reflect on music elements such as melody, rhythm, and instrumentation. Document their listening experiences before and after the symphony visit. Most importantly to develop further writing skills through music-related prompts and creative responses.

Many of my scholars do not have access to personal journals for music-related writing. By integrating music journaling into our curriculum, we will connect literacy with music education and foster deeper engagement with classical music. Writing about composers and compositions before the performance will prepare students for what they will hear, making the symphony visit more meaningful and impactful.
