My Students

"Why be average when you can be awesome?" This quote takes place of pride on the forefront of my classroom as it is our motto. My students need to know that regardless of their learning disabilities, they can be more than just an average student, they can be awesome!

My students are middle school math students, grades 6-8.

All of my students are a unique puzzle piece that builds character to the whole that is my classroom and that is what makes them amazing. All of my students have a learning disability of a sort but that doesn't stop them from reaching for the stars. The majority of my students are bussed in from neighboring areas; areas that are high in poverty. Despite the many hurdles that are in their way, my students continue to persevere in my class and in life. They deserve the opportunity to be able to show the world their brilliance and this project will assist them in getting that much closer to that goal.

My Project

As a result of the students's learning disabilities, constant re-checking for understanding is necessary. One of the activities that has shown great promise when checking for understanding is by allowing the students to use the math content and apply it to the real world. In doing so, students create a poster with how they have solved the real life math problem. Being able to have materials such as rulers, calculators, compasses and so much else in order to create these projects is necessary in a math class.

Being able to have these materials in a math class room allows the students to get a proper math education which will further prepare them for the future.

This will further enable my students to be able to succeed in life.
