Preparing Kids for the Future!

Help me give my students a tiny, pocket-sized computer, the BBC micro:bit. This device encourages kids to learn basic coding and programming skills to prepare them for today’s tech-savvy world.

My Students

My students are creative, energetic, and inquisitive. They come to school each day eager to learn and ready for hands-on activities. My students thrive for knowledge and need our support to prepare them for the future. Within the classroom students are developing social emotional skills, learning how to fail and pick themselves back-up, learning collaboration, problem solving, literacy, computer science, engineering, and math skills.

Our classroom is diverse and full of individualists with varying needs and backgrounds.

The students value working together and thrive with collaboration and teamwork. My students are highly engaged in the engineering process and learning computer science skills.

“Every student deserves a chance to succeed!”

As a teacher in a low-income school with a high English Language learning population, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My goal is to provide a positive learning environment that supports ALL students!

My Project

The micro:bit provides a hands-on interactive approach to help students master the Nevada Computer Science Standards and the Nevada Integrated Technology Standards. It provides access to using algorithms, programming, and computing systems through the pocket-sized device. Students will develop programs that include sequences, events, loops, and conditionals (Computer Science Standard 4.AP.C.1). Students engage in problem solving, collaboration, and communication while learning how the computer hardware and software work together in a system (Computer Science Standard 4.CS.HS.1).

Students learn by doing!

The device also directly connects to Nevada Next Generation Science Standards relating to energy transfer and circuits. Students engage in applying scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another with transfer of light and sound (Science Standard 4-PS3-4). Students are able to transfer knowledge acquired from District Foss Curriculum Lessons.

21st Century learning is about good teaching—good teaching that prepares learners with content knowledge, basic skills, AND the learning skills needed to thrive in the colleges and careers of a locally, nationally, and globally interconnected world. As the world changes we are preparing students for jobs that have not yet been created, beginning with computer science and coding skills in elementary school will help prepare students for the future.
