Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We know that the home environment of students, not sometimes but always, have an impact on the classroom. The majority of my students come from low-income homes, and they are faced with challenges at home and in their communities that should not have to follow them into their school environments. For years, the students at my school have not had the opportunity to take advanced placement courses, but that's changing in the fall!

As advances placement curriculum starts, students will need access to a variety of contemporary and canonical books to stretch them and assist in ensuring their success in the course!

My Project

For the first time in nearly a decade, students at my school have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement courses. One of the classes is Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, and students need to read a variety of novels to be successful in this course. While many of the students in the class are readers, to be successful in this course students are going to read a lot, and it is critical that students have books that they want to read but are also appropriate for the course requirements!

AP Literature students are required to read independently, and I want to ensure that the books in my classroom library are appropriate for the course and interesting to students!

The books selected for literature circles in this course are novels that the college board would consider of "literary merit," but they are also books that will engage my students.

By providing several copies of books, independent reading can become a collaborative activity where students have the opportunity to discuss ideas that are important to their success in the course. Students will have daily discussions on themes, characterization, style, etc., but by completing literature circles, an ordinarily solitary experience will become a collaborative and interactive one!
