My students need books of their own liking such as, "Freak the Mighty" and "Monsters" which allows my students to make connections of text to text, self and world while they learn.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"This time I don't say huh because then I might have to explain how I'm an L.D., and reading books is the last thing I want to do. I want to teach my students that "huh" is not a word that they will be using often after reading this book and becoming proud of who they are. "Stars" in our eyes.
Our students are hard working and readily willing to take on challenges of learning in different environments.
My students comes from single parents homes, blended home and shelters. They carry the stresses of their families and the communities they live in. Each day I see stars when I come to class. The lights in their eyes are for learning to care for each other and learning to trust. My students are fun, caring and looking for opportunities to grow academically, spiritually, and economically. All of my students are looking to trust someone who will direct them on the path their families and themselves know they can achieve. My school is great! we struggle, but together we are preparing our students to be career and college ready. Their lives are written in books that interest them and I want them to become open to the variety of books and information they may normally pass by. I tell them about all the great books, classics included, that I want them to experience.
My Project
In this unit, I would like for my students to read along as I play an audio of the book. During each chapter of the book, we will discuss text-to-life issues and the students will learn how to annotate while reading. The audio will be used for the students who are not on this reading level. This will surely include my students who are learning disabled. At the same time, they will be able to enjoy and demonstrate their knowledge of text-to-life situations without feeling ashamed, guilt, and anger because they are not able to read this on their own. The lessons will include bullying, differences, trust, family, inner strengths, and friendship. I understand this is a lot to cover but this same book with be used during the end of the year as a station, where the student will work in small groups to retell the story in poster form, rewriting the end of the story and comparing the story to and editorial that may have taken place.
This project will improve my classroom because each student will be able to hold the book, "Freak the Mighty" as we work.
This will be our first class set that will be used more than once throughout the year. My students will be able to see themselves in some of the characters in "Freak the Mighty" and "Monster" as they read. Lastly, my students will be able to make changes in their lives because they are able to make connection of text to text, self, life and the world regarding trust, life, and friendship.
