As part of our health curriculum, I help to teach my autistic students about the roles of health care professionals like doctors, nurses, and dentists. Because visits to medical offices can be a challenge for some students and can cause them to experience anxiety and fear, I try to help prepare the students and minimize their uncertainly with role play. Through role play, the students can explore some common scenarios they may encounter at a medical office and practice coping strategies they can employ in these scenarios if they begin to feel worried or anxious. This makes actual visits to medical offices more familiar and less frightening for students.
Please help to provide me with doctor kits, dentist kits, and a barbershop kit to help my autistic students and students with anxiety to role play visits to medical offices.
With repeated exposure and practice, the students will begin to feel more confident that they can handle these potentially stressful situations.
