My Students
Our school is a Title I school that participates in the Title I School-Wide Program. Many of our students come from low-income families and 99.5% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. While we have a hard-working and dedicated staff, the students and community we serve face economic challenges. Our student population ranges from Academically Gifted to students with varying levels of learning disabilities. Our student body is made up of 94% minority students mostly African American and Hispanic.
Though our students may face struggles they are well rounded students with a passion to learn.
Our students are eager to find school activities that they can participate in and elementary school is the perfect time to instill a love for reading.
My Project
I am requesting books my students need to participate in the Battle of the Books program. Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students. The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun competing with their peers.
Our students participate in a district wide Battle of the books competition yearly.
In this competition students read 15 books and compete in battle rounds where they answer questions on the books. Though students have to read the books independently, multiple copies are important so that students can discuss the text in small groups and compare notes from the text. A majority of our students being from low-income homes so many can not afford to buy the books on their own. Not only will your donations help our students who are participating in the battle of the books but it will also add amazing additions to our library collections.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
