In my classroom we work to become a "community of learners", tolerant to differences, proactive in allowing the students a say in how they are learning and flexible in ways to increase student engagement. We don't just talk "math", we share stories, laugh about life and integrate lessons with life's teachable moments on how to be a better member of society and make a positive impact.
In order to make math fun and to increase student participation and student concentration, I set up a flexible classroom that helps to create a class environment that they want to be actively involved.
Why do I do this? The pocketed folder becomes a portfolio of their work which allows them to focus on their area of needs and to understand their successes! The spiral/composition become an interactive notebook for important referencing. The pencil, their tool for success!
These materials stay in my class to ensure the students always feel prepared and ready for class!
My Project
Our school is located in a demographically low socio-economical area. I want students to come into my room without the worry of simple preparedness for class. I start the year by giving each of my students a pocketed folder, a spiral and the ability to borrow a pencil (which they keep in class), or I give them a pencil for their day. This gives them an immediate "readiness" to learn in class without the pressure of purchasing items which may take their families some time to obtain.
They keep a pocketed portfolio of their work, which is a visible reminder of their success's and needs.
I fill it with reminders, notes of encouragement and make up work from their absences. They always come to my class feeling ready and responsible for their own success.
The pencil sharpener keeps them working. School sharpeners are usually broken or the blades are dull, which breaks pencils or sharpens them down to nubs. Something so simple, yet so valuable is able to keep the classroom moving forward as a working environment.
The chair caps eliminate the screeching of the chairs metal feet scraping along the linoleum floor. This distracts students with attention disorders and can break concentration multiple times in their 47 minutes of class.
Please help me give these students these simple but important supplies. I have never requested help. I have purchased these items for my students for 35 years. This year, my husband fought lung cancer....and won. But the financial toll was difficult. A budget for my students supplies is not available this year... at all.
Attitude improves Aptitude. With your help, each child has the ability to set their attitude for success from the first day of school!
