My Project
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with a population of 81.7% Minority Enrollment. We are a Title 1 school and are classified as Rural: Fringe.
Because our students come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds and struggle with their language acquisition, there is an ever-growing academic gap.
The percentage of students achieving proficiency in math is 34% (which is lower than the Hawaii state average of 42%). The percentage of students achieving proficiency in reading/language arts is 48% (which is lower than the Hawaii state average of 54%).
Due to budgetary restraints, there was no program for two years prior to me, so the students had not received any instruction nor given the opportunity to learn and practice fitness, group cooperation, social and emotional learning, and other skills during the school day.
I service the entire middle school students including students in special education, so this project would impact a large number of children. The children need practice with group cooperation, social and emotional learning, along with the opportunity to use various equipment, which they can then incorporate into their lives outside of school.
