My Project

I have created an engaging sculpture project where my students will create their very own dinosaur figurines using 14 gauge wire, masking tape, and paper mâché.

The project aims to blend creativity with hands-on learning, allowing students to explore their artistic skills while diving into the fascinating world of paleontology.

Each student will choose a dinosaur species to research, gaining insights into its physical characteristics, habitat, and behavior. This research will serve as the foundation for their sculpture, ensuring that the final product not only showcases artistic talent but also reflects an understanding of the chosen dinosaur.

To begin, my students will use the 14 gauge wire to construct an armature that forms the basic shape of their dinosaur. This sturdy wire frame will provide a strong support structure for the sculpture. Once the armature is complete, students will wrap masking tape around the wire to flesh out the shape and add volume, allowing for a more defined structure. This stage encourages students to think critically about proportions and details as they bring their dinosaur to life. After completing the tape work, students will apply paper mâché over the frame, layering strips of paper soaked in a glue and water mixture to create a solid, textured surface.

Once dried, students will have the opportunity to paint and decorate their dinosaurs, adding vibrant colors and intricate details to showcase their unique features. This final stage not only enhances the visual appeal of the sculptures but also allows students to express their creativity fully. At the conclusion of the project, students will present their finished dinosaurs to the class, sharing their research and the artistic process behind their creations.

This project not only fosters artistic expression but also encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for the prehistoric creatures that once roamed the Earth.
