My students need 13 chair cushions. Please help them get their "wiggles" as they improve their posture, balance and focus while sitting on their chairs.
Think back to the last meeting you attended. Do you remember how your derriere felt after sitting on a hard plastic chair? Everyday, I ask my students to spend part of their independent learning time sitting on the same kinds of chairs. Hard plastic chairs are not optimal seating for a child.
My students are amazing, young learners who sometimes have the wiggles.
Our school serves 80% free and reduced lunch, 30% bilingual, and 30% special education students. My students feel good about themselves when they are able to complete a task and reach a goal they have set. To complete their work, and to allow others around them be successful, they need to be able to stay seated and focused during their independent reading and writing times. As a class the students are working together to build engagement and stamina. I am asking that stay engaged with the learning task for up to 10 minutes at a time. This can be quite challenging for the majority of my students. We are working up to 20 min., then to 30 minutes or longer by November.
My Project
The tactile inflatable chair cushion is an ideal choice for my students who have sensory processing and focus challenges. This cushion allows for just the right amount of movement and vestibular stimulation to develop balance, posture, and ability to focus on a cognitive task. Research suggests movement can create a filter from over stimulation and encourage focused attention. I believe with the simple addition of these seat cushions my students will have the tactile stimulation they are searching for in their sometimes random movements around the classroom space.
Please help me, help my students, by donating to this worthy project.
Imagine a classroom of young readers finishing their very first chapter book, such as Henry and Mudge or Judy Moody. Imagine the joy and sense of accomplishment these deserving students will feel when they finish their first published piece of writing. Can you see them sitting cooperatively at their table groups putting their finishing touches to their illustrations? I can!
