I teach 11th graders in a non-selective public school located in an under served area of North Philadelphia. Our school focuses on teaching students content within meaningful and realistic settings.
Students learn skills that prepare them for college and careers by working collaboratively on meaningful and realistic projects and then have the opportunity to share their work with peers, families, and industry partners.
My students are desperate to understand why school is important or helpful to their lives. Prior to high school most of our students have had little to no exposure to different career fields. We work with each student to understand their specific passions and then encourage them to use their own power and agency to realize their dreams and give back to society.
The weather station that I am requesting includes sensors to measure wind direction and speed, temperature, humidity, and air pressure. The station is needed as part of a project designed for students to explore the field of meteorology. Through the project, students will learn the importance of meteorology in protecting people and in tracking climate conditions. Students will also learn how to collect data, and look for patterns that can be used to make predictions about future weather events. They will work collaboratively to create a weather forecast and be given the opportunity to communicate their findings to an audience of their peers, teachers, family members, and possibly industry and academic partners.
The weather station will be placed in a secure location on the school grounds and students will access data in the classroom through wireless data transmission.
The data will be used by students for tracking weather conditions and to prepare their weather forecasts.
