My Students
My students are the children of migrant workers. Better than 90% of our students are Spanish speaking and speak English as a second language. The skills these students learn in my shop classes are skills they will utilize throughout their lifetimes.
With more than 85% of our students classified as low income, the majority of my students do not really know of the vast world and opportunities outside of their hometown.
With the chance to travel to different colleges and compete using different hands-on skills, my students receive an opportunity to discover a world outside of our hometown.
My Project
Students today struggle with understanding how to read a tape measure. My classes go beyond this and I push my students to excel at reading precision tools such as calipers, micrometers, and bore gauges. Theses skills are necessary in the automotive industry as well as the machinist trade. Students must be able to understand the basic mathematical concepts of decimals as well as how to add hundreds and thousands of an inch.
If students do not understand the difference between 1/100 on an inch and 1/1000, it can mean the difference between several hours and several hundred dollars worth of work.
Teaching students how to read a micrometer is a lost art in the work force today. However, it is a skill I plan to continue to teach to my students with your help.
