Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hi! I am a first grade teacher at an inner city school in Chicago. Being in the primary grades requires plenty of art materials, not only for art but for all of the subjects! The children are learning how to read and write and a lot of times struggle with telling me what they know through writing. So, I try to provide them with different ways to express to me what they know, like drawing a picture, painting a picture, creating a mural, puppet, and even a diorama! We love to paint number sentences with pictures in Math!
Just the other day, one of my students was begging me to allow all of them to do a painting project. I had just given some of the last of the paint I had to another classroom to use. So, I was unable to fulfill her request and she was a little sad. I wish we had enough supplies to always do wonderful and creative projects where the students can express themselves independently and use their imaginations to help them learn, but it is hard to always spend what little money I have on supplies when I also have to buy motivating rewards to encourage them and resources to improve their knowledge.
The primary grades do share supplies often and most of the teachers end up buying all of the supplies ourselves. If we could just get some paint, paint brushes, construction paper, glue, paper bags, wiggly eyes, and pipe cleaners, we would be eternally grateful!
