Pre-Writing Skills to Prepare Students for Kindergarten
Help me give my students the materials they need to begin to build their hand strength. This will directly support the skills needed to begin writing in Kindergarten.

My Students
I teach in a public, Pre-K classroom that supports low income children, helping them get ready for Kindergarten so that they can succeed with their peers. My students are ready to learn through hands-on experiences. This is the best way that Pre-K aged students learn. They have a strong interest in science, math, literacy, and gross motor activities. I am in need of more tools to support them in pre-writing skills.
My Project
Last year we were restricted with how our students could use manipulatives. This year we are able to start using manipulatives again, so I am in need of materials and manipulatives to bridge the gap in their learning and build meaningful hands-on experiences. Research shows that hands-on exploration is the best way for young children to learn. Our program prioritizes open exploration and play based learning so these manipulatives are key to teaching the necessary skills to be ready for kindergarten. By purchasing these materials I will be able to fill gaps in my fine motor manipulatives that are necessary to meet the essential standards my students need to be successful in kindergarten. The manipulatives that I have selected meet our curriculum guidelines, Nevada PreK standards, and Nevada Kindergarten standards listed below.
Fine motor activities increase hand strength which will allow students to grip a pencil and begin to write letters using the tripod grip; which is necessary in kindergarten.
Pre-K Standards:
6.PK.2 Demonstrate the muscle strength, dexterity, and control needed to manipulate items (eg. scissors, writing utensil, paint brushes, play dough, buttons/snaps, etc.)
6.PK.3 Use fingered or tripod grasp with drawing, painting, or writing instruments
5.PK.2a Experiment with beginning techniques for using various writing materials.
Kindergarten Standrads:
L.K.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
a. Print many upper and lowercase letters
5.K.2 With assistance , draw or communicate ideas in written form
Nearly all students from low‑income households
