Last year we were restricted with how our students could use manipulatives. This year we are able to start using manipulatives again, so we are in need of materials and manipulatives to bridge the gap in their learning and build meaningful hands-on experiences. Research shows that hands-on exploration is the best way for young children to learn. Our program prioritizes open exploration and play based learning so these manipulatives are key to teaching the necessary skills to be ready for kindergarten. By purchasing these materials I will be able to fill gaps in my science and dramatic play centers, which are lacking in manipulatives that are necessary to meet the essential standards my students need to be successful in kindergarten. The manipulatives that we have selected meet our curriculum guidelines and the Nevada PreK standards listed below. Standards: Math- 5.PK.1 Identify and sort information Language- 5.PK.2b Trace and progress to copying basic shapes. 1.PK.3 Identify letters in own name. Science- N.PK1.A Observe their world N.PK.3 Use tools to observe and explore different objects/environments P.PK.1 Sort objects according to observable properties (eg. by shape and color) P.PK.3 Explore what happens to objects in relation to other forces (ex. Magnets, gravity, and water) L.PK.4 Use five senses to explore and investigate the natural world. Physical Development- 2.PK.2 Performs a variety of large motor skills (ex. Balancing on a beam) 6.PK.2 Demonstrate the muscle strength, dexterity, and control needed to manipulate items (eg. scissors, writing utensil, paint brushes, play dough, buttons/snaps, etc.) Dramatic Play- 1.PK.3 Act out roles that involve another child(ren) in related role; for instance, mother and baby, grocer and shopper. 1.PK.7 Use dress-up clothes or costumes and other props in dramatic.
