This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a pre-school program for students with special needs. Our school is a small school located in Boyle Heights (East Los Angeles). My students lack a lot of resources to help them receive the education they need. We need to practice social skills and academics.

Our School is a Title 1 school and resources are very limited.

The school is unable to provide a lot of the resources my students to learn academically and socially. A lot of our families are Spanish Only and in poverty levels. A big part of Pre-School is for the students to learn social skills. Social Skills are learned through games and sharing, but we don't have game or toys to teach such skills. I buy as much as I can out of my pocket, but my funds are limited too. I have a total of seven students, one girl and six boys. One of my little boys has autism and needs a lot of hands-on instruction and rewards to keep him interested. My little girl is non-verbal and communicates by pointing. Snacks are a great reinforcer for our students. For most of them in order to do work we must reward them.

My Project

Students with special needs need a lot of hands-on learning. The beanbags, handkerchiefs will be used to play games where the children will learn social skills; such as sharing, turn taking, and waiting. The basketball hoop will be used so the children can practice their gross motor skills by jumping and throwing and continue working on their social skills. The sensory tubs are great for students with autism to meet their touching sensory needs and helps calm them down. Theraputy is another great way for the students to practice their fine motor skills.

The donations from my project will improve my classroom incredibly, because the children will have more resources available to them.

The beanbags and scarves are something we do not have in the classroom and the children will have more to play with. The students will have many more things to learn with and be have more opportunities to socialize.
